11/25 8:15 ET At New England -23 Philadelphia 50.5

I know the first number is the points you take off your score, but what's the second number? or just explain it the best you can.

admin answers:

It's the over-under total. For example, Vegas (which sets the lines) says that the total number of points that will be scored in today's Packers-Lions game is 47. You have to determine if the total points scored will be more than ("over") or less than ("under") Vegas' total. So if you put a dime on "over" and they score 50, you win.

Sandy asks…

Betting Lines for the NFL... Your Opinion.?

Please only reply if you know what you are talking about:

the game is Dallas at Seattle: Offer your picks for over/under and offer your opinion on the final score:

Seattle -3
or
Dallas +3

Over/Under: 46.5

Final Score:

Seattle: ??
Dallas: ??

admin answers:

I think the game will be an under with Seattle to come out on top. THey are great at home and have the playoff experience. The weather could also be a factor. Check that out.
Romo is having a nightmare of late, and the Seattle crowd will be LOUD.
Seattle 31
Dallas 10
By the way I am a Pats fan and we would kick both their butts.

John asks…

Historic NFL Betting Line Movements?

I am looking for data on the internet that would have the following information:

NFL 2003, week 12, steelers vs seahawks, opening line=steelers -4, ending line=steelers-5.5
[then the same information for all other games of week 12]
[then the same information for all other weeks of 2003]
[then the same information for all other years (mainly 2002-2005)]

Does anyone know where I could find data like this or if it even exists on the internet?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

admin answers:

Not sure. Why not use an internet search engine to try and find this information?

Jenny asks…

NFL Preseason is here...and so are the betting lines!?

for me, Monday night is poker night, and with the return of the NFL, it's also sports-betting night.

Tonight's match up features the Cleavland Browns and the New York Giants. Game is in New York, and the Giants are a 1.5 to 2.5 point favorite.

What team's gonna bring me home the money?

admin answers:

Well, preseason is difficult to judge and I'm a Browns fan and alot of Browns are sitting tonight so I'd have to go with the Giants laying the chalk.

Questions About Nfl Standings Yahoo

Sandra asks…

NFL:What would happen in these playoff scenarios?

Say the Raiders beat the Chargers and the Broncos beat the Chiefs, who would win the Division?

Both teams would have equal Conference and Division records, and they split the head-to-head series 1-1. How would it be decided?

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/standings The standings are almost identical.

I remember reading on Yahoo that the Raiders would win most "Strength of schedule" Tiebreakers.

admin answers:

If Denver wins next week, they will win the division no matter what Oakland does.

Oakland needs to beat the Chargers and they need Denver to lose to Kansas City.

I'm not exactly sure why. I use ESPN's Playoff Machine. You can pick the winners of the games and it will show you who would win the division. It's much quicker and easier than reading through the tiebreaking scenarios and then trying to figure out who would win what.

BUT, if Oakland beats San Diego and Denver beats Kansas City, and the Ravens beat the Bengals, the Raiders would get a Wild Card. LOL, it's crazy.

Lizzie asks…

Who expected Carolina's defense to be only 16 points behind the Titans at this point in the season?

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/standings;_ylt=AiZKFosuUulx83qXXErBAQx_2bYF

In points allowed only one team has permitted fewer points than the Carolina defense, and with Detroit coming up next week for the Panthers, and Jacksonville coming up for the Titans who knos whow it will turn out by the end of next week. God bless defense.

admin answers:

I've been impressed with the Panthers' defense thus far. I've been saying for a few weeks they are probably the top defense in the NFC.

I'm not a Panthers' fan, but I hate the Broncos, so I'll cheer for them at least once this season. Hopefully, they can make Cutler cry, too.

Robert asks…

NFL 2008: Can anyone explain how the NY Giants have clinched their division with 2 games still left to play?

Both Yahoo Sports Standings and NFL Standings have indicated the Giants have clinched the NFC East, but there are still 2 games left to play.

The Giants are division leaders with an 11-3 record, the Cowboys are second with a 9-5 record. Both teams have split their head-to-head games this season.

The question is if NYG finishes their final two games and goes 0-2, and if DAL goes 2-0, both team records would be tied. So how does the NFL tiebreaker clinch the Giants to win the division with 2 games still left to play?

For reference: http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures

SEE: TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION

I look forward to your honest, sincere & clear answers.

Thanks,
- TJ
WINNER: Nick has the right idea... thanks to all!

The NFL's 2nd tiebreaker for Division Winner IS division record, yet this is not the tiebreaker that clinches NYG with the NFC East title. For if NYG and DAL finish with same regular season record, then they will also have the same division records. Hence, Nick and others were correct to look at the 3rd tiebreaker: record against common opponents.

NYG and DAL have 8 common (non-division) opponents, (CLE, CIN, ARI, STL, SFO, SEA, PIT, BAL). The Giants played them all and their one loss was to CLE 14-35, giving NYG a 7-1 record against common opponents. Cowboys played 7 of 8 games (BAL is coming up on 12/20), but even if the Cowboys were to beat BAL, they've already lost 3 of these common games (ARI 24-30, STL 14-34, PIT 13-20), so the best they can finish is 5-3, thus giving NYG the 2008 NFC East title.

PS: Based on this knowledge, NYG clinched in Week 14 when Cowboys lost to PIT, even though NYG lost to PHI the same week.

admin answers:

Better common games record, we lost to steelers and cards, they beat them

Steven asks…

Who do you decide a tie for a play off place?

If 2 or 3 teams have the best record in there division, but not all 3 can make the play offs because of space, how do they decide?

This happen with Browns last year and in 2002 it was a 3 way tie in the AFC East

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/standings?year=season_2002

admin answers:

They have been discussing this for many years, and are still trying to perfect the rule. As of now, they go to division record, and if they tied there too, they decide who played a stronger schedule of opponents (opponents are rated by their record the previous year).

Questions About Nfl Betting Lines Picks

Laura asks…

pro line NFL opinion

ok I bet 10 bucks on a pro line ticket I could win 123 bucks.
I picked ny giants to beat detroit, new england to beat baltimore,
and indiannappolis to beat carolina. What do you think ,good picks?

admin answers:

Yup u should win sum money

Betty asks…

Who else thinks there must be massive rule changes in all sports? Below is my NFL list?

1. NO MORE 1 POINT KICKING PAT'S. That's a routine 19 yard field goal which are rarely missed, only way it stays is by making it 30 yards, so forget it. The only acceptable PAT is the optional 2 point conversion, and that should be from atleast the 5 yard line. And if the other team picks it off or recovers a fumble it counts even if they return it for a TD. Even if they don't score they get to keep the ball where they return it to and start the next posession without a kickoff. If you choose to not go for 2 you only get 6 points for the TD and then kickoff normaly.

2. THE GROUND CAN CAUSE A FUMBLE. The rule saying the ground can't cause a fumble wasn't instituted until '89 or '90 so that's gone and it returns to normal. That'll teach these guys to hold onto the ball.

3. LET THE PLAYER CELEBRATE A LITTLE AFTER A TD, ANY OTHER CELEBRATING DURING THE GAME IS AN AUTOMATIC 5 YARD PENALTY. I'm sick of these guys doing a dance acfter every catch and every tackle. The only reason they're celebrating is they make millions to do it and probably get a $ bonus for big plays. The refs never throw a flag after that crap, then turn around and flag a 10 second celebration after a TD. NO MORE!

4. UNLESS A PLAYER IS FLAGERANTLY AND INTENTIONALLY TRYING TO HARM ANOTHER PLAYER, NO FLAG. That means you can lead with your helmet, horse collar, hold, hit the quarterback as hard as you want, and anything else they've disallowed that further pussifies the game.
This is a full contact sport and these guys are huge and often moving at full speed. I don't care how much you try to protect them, someone's gonna get hurt in every game. And even if he does get hurt, sowhat! Occupational hazard! Besides he's a millionaire who can afford the best medical treatment in the world! And if it's carrer ending, sowhat! History has proven that no matter how good you are your expendable cause there will be somebody just as good if not better to take your place. Carrer ending injury, whatever, even if you played one season you're a millionaire, which is more than most of us can say.

That's all i've got time for now, but the point is if these guys are going to make millions let's make their sport tougher. These professional athletes are just there to entertain real working class folks. They are rewarded way too much money just because they can play a game better than an average person. A lot of these pro athletes never work a real job in their life. They excel at sports in high school and get a scholarship to a college where they continue to play sports and otherwise screw around without really studying or learning anything important. Then the really good ones get drafted and are automatically awarded millions for doing nothing for his new team. Even if this newly drafted guy sucks, he doesn't care cause he signed a contract for millions. We fans are the real idiots here, because we think these guys are heroes. We loose fortunes betting on them, wear their expensive jerseys, spend thousands on tickets to watch them play, and argue endlessly and pointlessly about who's the best. It's all vanity and fodder in the end, I learned that from reading Eclesiates, an Old Testament book in the Bible. All people, we Americans especially need to stop seeking entertainment so often and focus on the real matters of life. AMEN!

admin answers:

1. 1 TD > 2 FG's. I like that.

#2. I like how the ground can't cause a fumble

#3. There's a fine line between taunting and just being excited. I think taunting should penalized, but feel there's nothing wrong with showing genuine emotions of excitement

#4. Most flags occur before the play even starts: False starts, off-sides, delay of game, etc... We can't negate ALL penalties just because a player isn't flagrantly and intentionally trying to harm another player.

Mark asks…

I think sports are fixed.like nfl, nba.what do you think?

I think it is obviouss sports are fixed.not because of the minnesota game yesterday that was plain as day rigged.I am a indianapolis colt fan.My team is in the superbowl.but even this season.i have seen thing in there games like when they played new england and new england went for it 4th and 1 on indy 28 yrd line up by 7 and indy won.and look at jax vs jets in nov.when the running back morris jones drew was going in for the touchdown untouched and stopped and dropped down to his knee look at it on youtube jones drew jets v/s jags.they was down by 1 point 1:22 second and you chose not to run 1 more yard for the touchdown nobody around you and you stop to kick a field goal!!! I am already smelling a fix in the superbowl.they are already talking saints dont have a chance and expert picks are all indy.I think they are trying to convince everyone to bet on indy so they fix it for the saints to win.if they let indy come in vegas would be broke.what do you think.
for your info.lil mis whatever.I am not scared of the saints and looking for an excuse.and vegas going broke was a joke.I gave examples of games that things that happen was not explainable and should not have happen.like not to running in a obvious tochdown and stop.was that not to cover the line the bookmakers set?yes, every dog has his day and anything is possiable for anyone to win.but the call and plays that they call sometimes make the games look rigged.and as a fan in general it is makeing me lose my interest in the professional leagues.it begin to look like the wwf instead of the nfl.and yes,the saints could beat the colts but why are the announcers and so called sports experts not giving them a chance to win and saying they did not deserve to win.and a pole was takin on yahoo sports and everyone wanted to see colts v/s saints by a landslide.not minn v/s colts.so miss whatever you need to work on your reading comprihension and learn when someone is joking. loosen up.

admin answers:

Yesterdays game was not rigged. Shut up.

Richard asks…

Does anyone see Matt Ryan falling in the draft like Brady Quinn last year?

Last year, many people thought that the Browns could take him 3rd overall, and if they didn't, the Dolphins taking them was supposed to be a no-brainer. But of course, the Dolphins passed on him and then Brady dropped to number 22.

I can really see the same thing happening to Ryan this year. Many people see him going 3rd overall to the Falcons, and everyone seems to think that the Ravens will have to take him if he falls to them. But in my opinion, the Ravens have bigger needs at cornerback and the offensive line, and Matt Ryan is simply not worth a top 10 pick in my opinion. Sure, Mike Mayock is going to continue to hype Matt Ryan until the draft (especially since they both went to BC and Mayock has ties to Ryan's family), but I bet NFL teams don't quite agree with Mayock's unconditional love for Matt Ryan.
For people who can't see him falling past the Ravens: No one thought that the Dolphins were going to pass on Brady Quinn, especially for Ted Ginn Jr. Now, Matt Ryan, at least in my opinion, isn't even as good as Quinn. So why would the Ravens spend their 8th overall pick on Ryan when they're going to have to keep at least 3 QBs on their roster? Remember, the Ravens are clearly aware that if Ryan turns out to be a bust, they're in huge trouble. On the other hand, a defensive player is a lot less likely to be a bust, especially if he's going to be a part of the Ravens defense. McAllister and Rolle are both well past 30. What happened to the Ravens last year when they both went down?
And also, remember last year? Cleveland, Miami, and even Detroit were supposed to need a QB. But if the Browns didn't trade back into the first round, Quinn could've been until round 2.

admin answers:

Yep, if not farther.

Ryan had a pretty bad pro-day, he didn't bother with much of the combine, and it's a widely known fact that several of the other QBs in the draft have stronger arms than Ryan (some QBs like Joe Flacco have a MUCH stronger arm). At least Quinn had Charlie Weiss' pro-offense experience and a strong arm going for him. I'm not sure what Ryan has going for him at this point.

I can see Ryan dropping out of the first round if the day goes really badly for him.
