Questions About Nfl Standings Yahoo

Sandra asks…

NFL:What would happen in these playoff scenarios?

Say the Raiders beat the Chargers and the Broncos beat the Chiefs, who would win the Division?

Both teams would have equal Conference and Division records, and they split the head-to-head series 1-1. How would it be decided?

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/standings The standings are almost identical.

I remember reading on Yahoo that the Raiders would win most "Strength of schedule" Tiebreakers.

admin answers:

If Denver wins next week, they will win the division no matter what Oakland does.

Oakland needs to beat the Chargers and they need Denver to lose to Kansas City.

I'm not exactly sure why. I use ESPN's Playoff Machine. You can pick the winners of the games and it will show you who would win the division. It's much quicker and easier than reading through the tiebreaking scenarios and then trying to figure out who would win what.

BUT, if Oakland beats San Diego and Denver beats Kansas City, and the Ravens beat the Bengals, the Raiders would get a Wild Card. LOL, it's crazy.

Lizzie asks…

Who expected Carolina's defense to be only 16 points behind the Titans at this point in the season?

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/standings;_ylt=AiZKFosuUulx83qXXErBAQx_2bYF

In points allowed only one team has permitted fewer points than the Carolina defense, and with Detroit coming up next week for the Panthers, and Jacksonville coming up for the Titans who knos whow it will turn out by the end of next week. God bless defense.

admin answers:

I've been impressed with the Panthers' defense thus far. I've been saying for a few weeks they are probably the top defense in the NFC.

I'm not a Panthers' fan, but I hate the Broncos, so I'll cheer for them at least once this season. Hopefully, they can make Cutler cry, too.

Robert asks…

NFL 2008: Can anyone explain how the NY Giants have clinched their division with 2 games still left to play?

Both Yahoo Sports Standings and NFL Standings have indicated the Giants have clinched the NFC East, but there are still 2 games left to play.

The Giants are division leaders with an 11-3 record, the Cowboys are second with a 9-5 record. Both teams have split their head-to-head games this season.

The question is if NYG finishes their final two games and goes 0-2, and if DAL goes 2-0, both team records would be tied. So how does the NFL tiebreaker clinch the Giants to win the division with 2 games still left to play?

For reference: http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures

SEE: TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION

I look forward to your honest, sincere & clear answers.

Thanks,
- TJ
WINNER: Nick has the right idea... thanks to all!

The NFL's 2nd tiebreaker for Division Winner IS division record, yet this is not the tiebreaker that clinches NYG with the NFC East title. For if NYG and DAL finish with same regular season record, then they will also have the same division records. Hence, Nick and others were correct to look at the 3rd tiebreaker: record against common opponents.

NYG and DAL have 8 common (non-division) opponents, (CLE, CIN, ARI, STL, SFO, SEA, PIT, BAL). The Giants played them all and their one loss was to CLE 14-35, giving NYG a 7-1 record against common opponents. Cowboys played 7 of 8 games (BAL is coming up on 12/20), but even if the Cowboys were to beat BAL, they've already lost 3 of these common games (ARI 24-30, STL 14-34, PIT 13-20), so the best they can finish is 5-3, thus giving NYG the 2008 NFC East title.

PS: Based on this knowledge, NYG clinched in Week 14 when Cowboys lost to PIT, even though NYG lost to PHI the same week.

admin answers:

Better common games record, we lost to steelers and cards, they beat them

Steven asks…

Who do you decide a tie for a play off place?

If 2 or 3 teams have the best record in there division, but not all 3 can make the play offs because of space, how do they decide?

This happen with Browns last year and in 2002 it was a 3 way tie in the AFC East

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/standings?year=season_2002

admin answers:

They have been discussing this for many years, and are still trying to perfect the rule. As of now, they go to division record, and if they tied there too, they decide who played a stronger schedule of opponents (opponents are rated by their record the previous year).

Questions About Nfl Standings Wild Card

Mark asks…

Can someone explain to me how the wild card works in MLB standings?

I mostly watch NBA, which doesn't have wild cards for playoff positioning. Can someone explain how the MLB wild card works? Also, do you know if it's the same as how wild card works for NFL?

thx

admin answers:

Wildcard is the best win/loss record among teams from each league who IS NOT first in their division. The national league and american league each have one, and thats the 4th postseason team

Say, the Brewers (central) Phillies (east) and diamondbacks (west) lead their respective divisions, and the Braves (east) have the best win loss average among teams not in the lead, Then the Braves win the wildcard. (I chose random teams haha)

I don't pay attention to football as much, but yes it should be exactly the same.

Michael asks…

Could someone please explain how the Jags have the edge for the wild card over the Dolphins?

According to all sites, if the season ended today, the Jags would have the wild card over the Dolphins. How is that possible considering they now have the same record and the Dolphins beat the Jags today. I was under the impression that the first step in a tiebreaker would be the winner of a head to head game.

Tie Breaking Procedures.

http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures

admin answers:

Its the primary tie-breaking rule when there's more than two teams with the same record. Jax has the best conference record of the teams tied at 7-6 right now. In that sense, the Dolphins technically are behind Baltimore as well right now.

Corrected statement from my earlier wrong statement:
Jacksonville has the conference record tie-breaker over both Miami and Baltimore and NY as of right now. It also has the common opponents tie-breaker in its favor over all three teams. These are the primary and secondary tie-breakers in the event more than two teams in the conference were to finish tied at the end of the season.

Next thursday, Jacksonville hosts Indy. Dolphins fans might want to watch that one.

When do the Yahoo experts' Week 1 NFL picks come out?

The season starts in less than 36 hours and there are no Experts picks up.....what is up with that? I need to pick some SURE winners for my survival team, I'm leaning towards Pittsburgh over Cleveland, or Seattle over Tampa Bay. Any advice or info on the missing expert picks?

admin answers:

Pittsburgh over Cleveland without a doubt. CLE has Jamal Lewis but he is slow and a below average running back anyways. Willie Parker will run all over the Browns weak D.

Mary asks…

Do you agree with Yahoo nfl analysts superbowl picks?

No. I think it will be the Panthers and the Titans. New York does not have it this year. I'm thinking the Panthers will win the thing off teh strength of D Williams, and Steve Smith.

Questions About Nfl Conferences Teams

Mandy asks…

have nfl teams ever switched conferences?

if so, for what reason?

admin answers:

Yeah, the Baltimore Colts used to play in the old NFL. Then they were switched to the AFC. I don't know why. Maybe to balance out possible rivalries such as against the Steelers. By the way, the Steelers used to be in the NFL, too, as were the Cleveland Browns.

Lisa asks…

Why don't NFL teams play teams in their respective divisions or conference once?

Wouldn't it make divisional or conference games more meaningful if each team played the teams in their division once? Think about the implications for each match up. College and High School teams only play one game against teams in their own conference or division. I think it would make the NFL more interesting to watch.

admin answers:

Why bother having divisions in the first place?

William asks…

Last NFL Teams in Conference Championships?

The Cardinals victory over Carolina assured them a spot in their first Conference Championship game.

1) What's the only other remaining team to not play in a conference championship?

2) What remaining teams haven't won a conference championship?
(In addition to the Cardinals and the answer to #1)

Note: Conference championships officially started in 1970 in both conferences.

Bonus) Which team has played in both the AFC and NFC championship game?

admin answers:

1. Houston texans
2. Cleveland browns, jacksonville jags, new york jets, kansas city chiefs, houston texans, new orleans saints, detroit lions, arizona cardinals

bonus: seattle seahawks

Carol asks…

If multiple NFL teams have the same overall record, how is the draft order decided?

I'm assuming that you can't use the same tie-break format that is used for playoff scenarios since we're dealing with teams from both conferences.

admin answers:

1) The team with the lowest winning percentage at the end of the previous season drafts first in the NFL Draft.

2) The rest of the teams are placed in order from lowest winning percentage to the highest.

3) The Super Bowl winner drafts last, even if they do not have the highest winning percentage.

4) The Super Bowl loser drafts next to last.

5) Strength of schedule for the previous season is the first tie-breaker for teams with the same winning percentage.

6) Divisional and conference records are the next step in the tie-breaking procedure.

7) As a last resort, a coin toss is used to determine the order of selection for teams with the same winning percentage.

If a playoff and non-playoff team end the season with the same winning percentage, the non-playoff team selects before the playoff team regardless of strength of schedule.

Questions About Live Nfl Scores Yahoo

Thomas asks…

My FF Draft is Tues. Yahoo says draft must be Sunday BEFORE the week you begin scoring? Is that day too late?

I am the commishioner of a yahoo fantasy football league and we need to make a last minute change to our draft date. We want to move it to Tuesday September 2nd, but we want live scoring to begin on the fist official NFL season game Thursday the 4th.

Under the commishioner tools I am looking at the option to change my draft date and time, but there is this noate on the side of the screen it says: "IMPORTANT: Rotisserie drafts must be completed at least one day BEFORE the date you wish scoring to begin. Head-to-Head drafts must be completed no later than the Sunday BEFORE the week you wish scoring to begin. "

This note doesn't really make sense, is it that Yahoo's system just can't handle not having a week in advance to get scoring going?

My REAL question is that if I move my draft to Tuesday, is there anyway that I can guarantee that my league can begin scoring on Thursday the 4th? Can I manually start the league on time? What options are available to me?

admin answers:

Yes you can start it manually on time

Sandra asks…

Choosing the right fantasy football site?

Ok... I have created two custom fantasy football leagues. One on NFL.com and the other on Yahoo Fantasy Football. I have noticed that most of the settings are the same, Yahoo may have more. Yahoo also lets you have your own logo. I have always went with NFL.com though, and they changed a little this year. Also on Yahoo, your profile will also keep your records of past fantasy seasons I believe, but I'm wondering how the live scoring gamecenter will be. So which one should I go with?

admin answers:

Go with Yahoo!

I've tried every different type of fantasy league and Yahoo! Has proven to be the most convenient and user friendly, plus they have great fantasy updates and information.

Their one downfall was having to pay for live scoring, but last year they finally added the feature free of charge.

Plus the history aspect is very cool. It not only keeps track of all your historical personal performances and trophies, but it also keeps historical records of your past leagues. This allows you to browse through old leagues if you wanted to see who won or even wanted to read messages that were posted. It also allows you to automatically renew your league so you don't have to go through the entire set up process all over again.

This was beneficial for me because my friends and I always adjusted stats and scoring from the defaults to make it more competitive and now I can just pull them from leagues I've commissioned in the past.

Yahoo! Fantasy Sports is the way to go.

admin answers:

LOL Whats up buddy. I guess me and you are going to be battle one another since the Raiders and the Packers play next year. This will be the first time the Packers have been out to Oakland since Brett Favre's father died and he had the game of his life. I remember that game like it was yesterday and I have never rooted for the Raiders to lose other than that night. Anyway to answer your question I am looking forward to playing the NFC North teams and I can see the Raiders possibly going 3-1 against the NFC North teams. As for the other teams we play nothing special on there. I am just looking forward to beating the Green Bay Packers next season. Hope you will still be my buddy
