Questions About Nfl Coaches Salaries

Mary asks…

Redskins coaching staff

admin answers:

Ok not sure but i think that bellichick makes around 2million maybe more so i figure coaches make around the same
but maybe they are paid depending on their winning percentage.

Donald asks…

In the NFL, do the coaches' salaries count against the cap?

I'm assuming not. I was wondering what the limitations would be to teams like the Lions, Jets, Broncos, and Browns who are looking for new coaches.

admin answers:

No, they dont count against the cap but once a coach is fired the organization has to pay the entire remaining contract. So, for instance the Browns still have to pay something like 20 million dollars to Romeo Crennal for the remaining 3 years on his contract. So, depending on the owners personal budget they may shy away from hiring someone demand 8 million a year, simply because that cuts into their profits.

Other limitations, they cant interview coaches that are still working. So, guys like Spags in NY and Rex Ryan cant be interviewed until after their team has been eliminated from the playoffs. And they also cant hire coordinators from other teams as coordinators. If they hire a coach away from another team, they have to promote that coach.

Chris asks…

Are there any College Football Coaches who have higher salaries than any NFL coaches?

admin answers:

LOL..many..Saban, Mack Brown, stoopes, Urban Meyer all earn several million per year

Ken asks…

Who makes more money? Top NCAA Football coaches or NFL?

Because of the huge revenues that college coaches bring in for their schools, do they actually make more than some of the (lesser paid) NFL coaches? Is there a website listing of the NFL coach salaries and top NCAA football coach salaries?

admin answers:

Nick Saban should get about $4 million a year to coach Alabama, which is a pay cut of about $500,000 from what he made coaching the Dolphins. The next highest-paid NCAA football coaches are Bob Stoops of Oklahoma ($3,450,000), Kirk Ferentz of Iowa ($2,840,000) and USC's Pete Carrol ($2,782,320).

The highest-paid NFL coach is Mike Holmgren, at $8 million a year. The Redskins' Joe Gibbs makes $5 million a year; Bill Parcells makes about $4.25 million a year.

The median NFL coach's salary is around $2.9 million a year; the average NCAA Division I-A coach's salary is around $950,000.

The USA Today and Forbes articles in the sources should give you plenty of info. The USA Today article has a large database of coaches, though some (notably Notre Dame's Charlie Weis) are omitted. There is no verifiable list of NFL coaches salaries - just about any figure you see is an estimate.

In all cases, pro and college, those salaries may be pegged to something else ("I must be the 7th-highest-paid coach," or incentive packages) and don't often include non-pay benefits like subsidized housing and travel expenses.
