Questions About Nfl Combine Drills

Ken asks…

Why are the NFL combine drills not done in uniform?

The NFL combine is an event in which college prospects perform various athletic feats in order to impress NFL talent scouts. However, all of the athletic feats are done in t-shirt and bike shorts. While this is understandable for the 225 pound weight lifting, as it is done on a bench, it is perplexing to me why the 40, the shuttle runs, the three cone drill, the broad jump, the high jump, etc. are not done in pads. These drills are meant to test speed, quickness, agility, etc. But, if I were a football coach, I would not care how fast a guy can run in workout gear. I would care how fast a guy can run, or how high he can jump in a game time situation, when he is encumbered by pads and a helmet. In the game, everything is done with pads on, so why is the combine done in gym gear? If the drills were done in full uniform, it would provide a much more accurate picture of on the field athletic ability, rather than showcasing the theoretical athletic prowess possessed by these players.

admin answers:

40-yard dash is used to test speed and explosion, players strart from a 3 point stance and runs 40 yds as quick as they can.....a great time can really increase your draft stock this is a timed test

Bench press strength test...wrs and qbs don't do this...you bench press 225 lbs as many times as you can in one sitting

Three cone drill used to test speed, agility and cutting ability
cones are set up in a traingle 5 ft apart, player starts from a 3 point stance at cone #1, runs to cone #2 touches a line, sprints back to #1 touches a line, then goes back to #2 running around it this time and cuts right to the #3, runs around it and then back to the 2nd cone around it and back to the 1st cone. This is a timed test, faster the better if done correctly

Broad jump done from the standing position and person sees how far forward they can jump....used to judge lower body strength

Vertical leap: is done from the standing position, to measure this they start the pole with plastic tips hanging out at the tip of the person's fingertips with his arms stretched above his head while he is standing flat footed, players then jump straight up as high as he can hitting the plastic tips for measurement...this helps judge players like wrs,db,cb when jumping or defending the passed ball

20-yard shuttle: is for lateral speed....player runs again from a 3 point stance 5 yds one direction, touches the line, sprints 10 yds the other direction touches the line and then 5 yds back to the starting position timed test

60-yard shuttle is the same as the 20 yd shuttle by longer and is for speed and endurance. Time test

Position specific drills: are drills specific for what ever position the player plays, its suppose to test the ability to play

Physical measurements : height, weight, body fat, arm and hand length are measured

NFL team interviews: teams can interview a certain number of players its suppose to help test character, football knowledge...etc.....players are so coached in what to say in these interviews its usually doesn't help

The Wonderlic Test: its a time test with 50 questions the more you get right the better, questions are harder farther into the test suppose to test IQ
Suppose to help to see if a player can learn the playbook

The Cybex Test: a machine is use to test flexiblity and joint movement

Injury evaluation : similiar to a physical, plus they look at past injuries and how they have healed

Linda asks…

I need to know what position drills are used for the NFL Scouting combine?

There are descriptions of most of the tests ran at the combine. However, I cannot find a description of the individual drills for each position.

admin answers:

Since the NFL Combine is extremely closed door, the only real answer for that is to contact http://www.nflcombine.net. They have a page for position drills, but it has yet to be updated. So until they do that you'll be in the dark.

Sandy asks…
